General information

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' 2003 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers estimated that in 2003 3.35 million people were aged 60 years and over. Just over half of these are reported having a disability and almost 20% reported their disability to be profound or severe.

There are over 60 articles with information and advice for seniors in the Health information section of Disability Online.

The Disability Services Division of the Department of Human Services funds a range of organisations to publish specialist disability information. You can search the Information Services websites using the Disability Online search.

Go For Your Life is part of the Victorian Government's campaign to get Victorians physically active, eating healthily and involved in the community.

In Victoria, the Office for Senior Victorians coordinates policy and action across Government to promote the wellbeing and social participation of older Victorians.

Services and support organisations

The Council on the Ageing (Vic) is a not-for-profit organisation run for and by people over 50. It has an advocacy, information, positive ageing and health promotion focus.

The Australian Government website www.seniors.gov.au provides a single point of access to Government and non-Government information and services for older Australians.

Local Government provides a range of services to assist older Victorians. Contact your local Council for more information.

Payments and benefits

Centrelink has a range of payments for your retirement and other information to assist if you are planning for retirement or are already retired.

The Victorian Seniors Card provides discount offers to cardholders with a wide range of businesses and services.
